Classic Tiramisu Recipe

Ingredients

For the Cream Layer:

  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (250g) mascarpone cheese, softened
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) heavy cream (cold)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Coffee Soaking:

  • 1 cup (240ml) brewed espresso or strong coffee (cooled)
  • 2 tbsp coffee liqueur (optional, e.g., Kahlúa or Marsala wine)

For the Layers:

  • 20–24 ladyfingers (Savoiardi biscuits)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cream Layer:

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together over a double boiler (or gently heat over low heat) until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is slightly thickened (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Add the mascarpone cheese to the cooled egg mixture and mix until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  4. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture until smooth and fluffy.

2. Prepare the Coffee Mixture:

  1. In a shallow dish, mix the cooled espresso with coffee liqueur (if using).

3. Assemble the Tiramisu:

  1. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture for about 1 second (do not soak too long, or they will become too soggy).
  2. Arrange a layer of dipped ladyfingers in a 9×9-inch (23×23 cm) dish or similar-sized container.
  3. Spread half of the mascarpone cream evenly over the ladyfingers.
  4. Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers, then spread the remaining mascarpone cream on top.
  5. Smooth the top and dust with a generous layer of unsweetened cocoa powder.

4. Chill and Serve:

  1. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight for the best flavor).
  2. Before serving, dust with extra cocoa powder and garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve chilled with a side of espresso or cappuccino.
  • Add fresh berries or a drizzle of melted chocolate for extra elegance.

Tips for the Best Tiramisu:

Use Fresh Ingredients: High-quality mascarpone and fresh espresso enhance the flavor.
Don’t Over-Soak the Ladyfingers: A quick dip in the coffee ensures the perfect texture.
Chill Longer for Best Flavor: Overnight refrigeration allows flavors to fully develop.
